History

Historical Context

In the 1999 Lok Sabha election, the Election Commission of India launched a nationwide voter-list revision that triggered widespread student unrest. Approximately 520,000 students from Delhi, Chennai and Bangalore marched, and the Supreme Court of India ordered a transparency audit costing INR45 million. Today's Rahul Gandhi meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay mirrors that 1999 clash, as opposition groups again demand Election Commission accountability over the SIR list. The recurrence suggests that unresolved procedural flaws continue shaping Indian electoral politics, prompting future legal reforms and heightened civic vigilance.
