History

Historical Context

On 24 June 2014, Uruguay striker Luis Suárez bit Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini, and FIFA responded with a nine-match international ban and a CHF 100,000 fine, the harshest World Cup suspension to date. That precedent shaped the Spanish Football Federation’s 2022 code, which now enforces a one-to-three-match suspension for red-card offences such as Vinícius Júnior’s hair-pulling, threatening his availability for the Sevilla game and the El Clásico.
