Indictment Overview
The State Attorney’s Office filed an indictment in the Central District Court in Lod against Prof. Shahar Nevo, a 60-year-old resident of Petah Tikva, accusing him of preparing a terrorist attack, extortion by threats, and obstruction of justice. Attorneys Roy Reis and Tomer Steinberg allege that Nevo devised a plan, dubbed “Am Ya'ase Transfer,” intended to kill “hundreds of Arab Israeli citizens,” including Bedouins, East-Jerusalem residents, and West-Bank Arabs. The indictment seeks his detention pending trial.
Academic Career Overview
Born on October 12, 1966, Nevo earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics at Tel Aviv University (1987), a master’s summa cum laude (1995) and a Ph.D. (1999) from Bar-Ilan University, where he later joined the faculty. Over more than two decades he published 51 scholarly works, taught courses such as “Mathematics for Chemists C” and “Infinitesimal Calculus 4,” and maintained collaborations with researchers in Germany, Australia and elsewhere. The most recent retake exam for his calculus class was held on September 1 of this year, just weeks before his arrest. His departmental web page, last updated on June 9, listed his research areas before it was removed.
Alleged Terror Plot Details
According to the indictment, Nevo conceived the plot over several years, motivated by an ideological stance linked to the “Operation Guardian of the Walls” riots and the later “Swords of Iron” war. He allegedly planned simultaneous attacks across Israel, targeting Arab citizens in multiple locations, with the objective of mass casualties.
Bar-Ilan University’s Response
The university also removed his name from the online lecturers’ list.
Current Legal Status
The prosecution has asked the court to keep Nevo detained until the case concludes. No trial date has been set, and the proceedings remain ongoing.
