History

Historical Context

When Indira Gandhi invoked Article 352 on 25 June 1975, she suspended civil liberties and ordered mass preventive detention, imprisoning over 100,000 opponents—including Janata leaders such as Jayaprakash Narayan—under laws like MISA. The Emergency’s 21-month rule set a precedent for large-scale arrests, a pattern echoed in today’s similar crackdown by authorities across the capital.
