History

Historical Context

During the 1975 Emergency, Indira Gandhi suspended civil liberties, censored the press and detained more than 100,000 opponents such as Jayaprakash Narayan after declaring the emergency on 25 June 1975. The 7 October 2026 Delhi nationwide police arrest of Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi revives those memories, sparking Supreme Court petitions and calls for electoral-roll reforms.
