History

Historical Context

India’s communal crackdown traces back to the 6 December 1992 demolition of the Babri Masjid, where a VHP-BJP rally of about 150,000 kar sevaks razed the mosque and sparked riots that killed over 2,000 people. The episode established a precedent for mass arrests, echoed in October 2026 when Delhi police detained roughly 600 protesters alongside figures such as Tushar Gandhi.
