- On 11 October, Bashir Shihab II, the Maronite emir who had ruled Mount Lebanon since 1788, surrendered to the Ottoman Empire. Sultan Abdülmecid I issued a firman removing him, ending the emirate’s semi-autonomous rule and restoring direct Ottoman control in the region.
