Historical Context

Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea triggered a war that killed over 10,000 people by 2017 and sparked Russian-linked cyber attacks, from the December 2016 BlackEnergy blackout to the June 27 2017 NotPetya wiper that cost about $10 billion worldwide. The campaign now includes 2026 Russian drone strikes on Yandex data centers in Ryazan, Kaluga and Vladimir, prompting NATO and U.S. cyber-defence upgrades.
