Yandex Bot Decline Explained

Ukrainian drones hit Yandex data centers in Sasovo (Oct 8), Kaluga (Oct 9) and Vladimir (Oct 11), halting operations.
The drop in Yandex-related bot traffic is mainly due to Yandex’s own web-crawling bots, not a fall in Kremlin-linked social-media bots.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said the strikes reduced pro-Kremlin bot activity and eased hateful online content.
Kommersant reported repairs could take six months because replacement parts are largely foreign-made and scarce.

Digital Backbone Exposure

Ukrainian drones struck Yandex data centers in Sasovo on Oct 8, Kaluga on Oct 9, and Vladimir on Oct 11, halting operations.
The strikes crippled banks, retailers, mobile operators and transport, exposing Russia’s vulnerable digital backbone and its reliance on foreign-made equipment.
The Sasovo center housed two of Yandex’s supercomputers and a plant linked to Iskander missiles.
Cloudflare Radar showed Yandex’s AS13238 requests fell to about 0.3% of the prior week’s peak.

Blindspot

Kommersant reported that repairing the damaged Yandex data centers could take at least six months because replacement parts are largely foreign-made and scarce.
Within this story's sources, this angle appears mainly in Center-leaning coverage and receives less attention in Left-leaning coverage.

History

Historical Context

On 27 April 2007 Estonia faced massive DDoS attacks on parliament, banks and media after a dispute over the Bronze Soldier monument, prompting NATO to create the Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence in Tallinn in 2008. The 2007 episode illustrates how state-linked cyber assaults can cripple critical services, a lesson echoed by today’s Ukrainian drone strikes on Yandex data centres in Russia.
