Apple’s Extend and Reframe in iOS 27
Apple’s iOS 27 adds two generative-AI tools to the Photos app: Extend and Reframe. Both features require Apple Intelligence and are available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 models and later, subject to language and regional availability. Older iPhones that can run iOS 27 but lack Apple Intelligence do not receive these tools.
Samsung’s Galaxy AI Photo Assist
Samsung implements a comparable workflow through Galaxy AI Photo Assist. The suite includes a Move tool that lets users reposition, rotate or resize selected objects; the AI then fills in the newly created background. Samsung’s standard Gallery editor also offers aspect-ratio changes, rotation and angle adjustments. The process varies slightly by model and software version, but generally follows the steps of selecting the photo, invoking Photo Assist, drawing around the target area, applying the move, and generating the fill.
Google Pixel’s Auto Frame
Google’s Android alternative, called Auto frame, appears in the Google Photos app. Users must have the latest Google Photos version, open the image, tap Edit -> Crop -> Auto frame, and then review and save the suggested framing.
Practical Guidance for Best Results
Both Apple and Google advise starting with a sharp, well-exposed image, making modest expansions first, and scrutinizing AI-generated areas—especially faces, hands, hair, jewelry and any text. Samsung’s documentation similarly recommends reviewing the filled background before saving. All three platforms suggest saving edited versions as copies to preserve the original file.
Limitations of Generative Editing
Because the tools create content that was never captured, the generated sections can contain “strange details,” particularly around complex textures, facial features, hands or textual elements. The AI may also struggle with accurate reproduction of letters and numbers. Consequently, the features are positioned as supplements to good composition rather than replacements for careful framing.
