History

Historical Context

Columbine High School’s April 1999 massacre, where 13 students and a teacher died and 20 were wounded, spurred nationwide security upgrades and zero-tolerance policies. Despite those measures, copycat incidents kept occurring, prompting ongoing debates over gun control. The 2026 Perry Street shooting in Erie, Pennsylvania reflects that persistent pattern and renews calls for stricter legislation.
