History

Historical Context

In 2012, the NFL and the NFL Players Association reached a $765 million settlement ending lawsuits over concussion injuries across the league. The agreement, championed by former lineman Mike Webster’s family, mandated $5 million annually for brain-injury research, player education, and safety audits. Today, the Browns’ rookie KC Concepcion suffered a head-impact penalty against the Jets, echoing the league’s ongoing concussion scrutiny after decades. Continued enforcement of the 2012 protocols pressures teams like Cleveland and New York to prioritize medical clearance and adjust roster depth.
