History

Historical Context

Health attacks in campaigns echo the 2000 Republican primary, when Senator John McCain’s melanoma surgery sparked rumors that hurt his momentum despite winning the New Hampshire primary with 49 % of the vote on February 1, 2000. The October 9, 2026 questioning of James Talarico by Donald Trump and Attorney General Ken Paxton shows the same tactic of using personal medical narratives to sway voters.
