History

Historical Context

The Election Commission’s “Special Intensive Revision” launched in October 2025 builds on a legacy of roll clean-ups dating back to the 1980s concern over foreign nationals and the 1997 Assam revision that flagged 300,000 “D-voters”. In May 2026 the Supreme Court affirmed the SIR’s legality, after an August 2025 order forced the Commission to publish a list of 65 lakh deleted names.
