History

Historical Context

In 1974 the NFL introduced a 15-minute sudden-death overtime for regular-season games, ending ties only if no score occurred. That season also featured the league’s first regular-season overtime, a 35-all tie between the Steelers and Broncos on September 22, 1974. The 2026 Giants-Commanders 27-27 stalemate shows how ties remain possible despite the rule change, prompting teams to refine late-game strategy.
