History

Historical Context

In 2018, No. 1 overall NFL draft pick Baker Mayfield entered his rookie debut in Week 2, marking the league’s first top-pick delayed start since the 1970s. Mayfield, playing for the Cleveland Browns, completed 12 of 20 passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns in that 21-17 victory over the Steelers. Fernando Mendoza’s October 11, 2026 Raiders debut mirrors Mayfield’s delayed introduction, as he entered with 6:06 left, completing six of eight passes for 48 yards. The parallel underscores how teams still manage quarterback transitions mid-season, influencing depth-chart stability and future draft evaluation strategies.
