History

Historical Context

On 11 March 2004, radical Islamists detonated bombs on Madrid’s commuter trains, killing 193 people and injuring about 2,500. The attack spurred EU leaders, including Spain’s government, to raise terror alerts and convene a security summit that reshaped continental counter-terrorism cooperation. Poland’s 2026 inspection of roughly 64,000 schools, directed by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, follows that same EU-wide security drive.
