History

Historical Context

In 2010, Portsmouth FC entered administration, prompting the Premier League to impose a nine-point deduction, a £10 million fine, and forcing the club to sell Fratton Park. HM Revenue & Customs pursued £7 million in unpaid taxes, while administrator Trevor Birch oversaw the club’s restructuring and reduced the squad to 18 players. Similarly, Manchester City’s 2026 financial breach ruling, cited by Enzo Maresca and Ryan Gravenberch’s red-card incident, sparked fan protests and highlighted UEFA’s stricter Financial Fair Play enforcement. The precedent warns clubs that repeated violations may trigger point penalties, larger fines, and possible league expulsion, prompting the Premier League to tighten compliance oversight.
