History

Historical Context

The Columbine High School massacre on April 20 1999, perpetrated by Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, shocked the nation and killed 13 students. Congress responded with the 1999 Safe Schools Act, allocating $1 billion to enhance security, while the NRA opposed new gun restrictions. Today's Eden Prairie investigation, led by Chief Matt Sackett and linking the Oct. 2 shooting to Somali-gang violence, echoes Columbine’s pattern of school-based firearm attacks. Both incidents prompted renewed debates on campus safety, influencing state legislatures to adopt stricter weapon-possession laws and mental-health interventions.
