History

Historical Context

In 2002 the Indian National Congress reclaimed Punjab, with Amarinder Singh sworn chief minister on 27 February after securing a majority of the 117-seat assembly. The party lost power in 2022 when the Aam Aadmi Party won 92 seats and formed Bhagwant Mann’s government. Pargat Singh’s oath on 11 October 2026 echoes the 2002 comeback as Congress aims to challenge the AAP rule.
