History

Historical Context

On August 24 1992 Hurricane Andrew struck South Florida as a Category 5 storm, causing $27.3 billion in damage, 65 deaths and leaving about 1.4 million without power. The disaster prompted a federal disaster declaration by President George H. W. Bush and massive inter-agency response. Decades later, President Donald Trump’s emergency declaration for Hurricane Isaias and Governor Ron DeSantis’s state aid echo the coordination first tested after Andrew.
