History

Historical Context

After Kim Il Sung’s death, Kim Jong Il halted missile work for four years and resumed it in 1998 with a Taepodong-1 launch that provoked worldwide condemnation, prompting a testing moratorium. Under Kim Jong Un the regime accelerated testing, reaching 129 launches by April 2023. The October 12 2026 short-range firings near Pyongyang echo the 1998 show of force.
