History

Historical Context

The Columbine High School massacre on April 20 1999 shocked the nation, prompting nationwide debates over firearm access and school security policy. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 13 students and injured 24, while the FBI later reported a $1.5 million settlement for victims' families. Similarly, the October 9 2026 Erie shooting claimed eight lives, including children, and revived calls for stricter gun legislation from Pennsylvania lawmakers. Both tragedies illustrate how unresolved mental-health concerns and lax firearm regulations perpetuate lethal violence, urging Congress to finally enact comprehensive background-check reforms.
