Historical Context

Project 17, launched in the 1990s, tasked the Indian Navy with a 5,000-ton stealth frigate built domestically. Mazagon Dock began constructing INS Shivalik in December 2000; the ship launched in 2003 and was commissioned on 29 April 2010 after Elecon Engineering supplied its CODOG propulsion, marking a decisive step toward naval self-reliance and demonstrated advanced signature suppression.
