History

Historical Context

The Great Fire of Paris in April 1910, which razed over 1,700 buildings, forced the city to overhaul fire safety. Mayor Georges Leygues mobilized 2,000 firefighters and deployed 150 water pumps, yet the Rue Saint-Honorat market lost 30 stalls. Like the 1910 blaze, the 2026 fire at the Marché des Enfants Rouges in Paris, reported by Mayor Ariel Weil and Minister Serge Papin, consumed roughly 930 sq m and threatened historic structures. Both incidents spurred municipal reforms, prompting modern French fire codes and state-funded reconstruction plans that preserve heritage while upgrading safety.
