History

Historical Context

The Great Fire of London erupted on 2 September 1666 when Thomas Farriner’s bakery on Pudding Lane ignited, and strong winds helped it consume roughly 13,200 homes by 5 September. King Charles II then ordered massive demolition and new fire-break rules that reshaped urban building practices. The Marché des Enfants Rouges fire today revives that memory, wiping out historic stalls and prompting Parisian preservation efforts.
