History

Historical Context

In 2005, Liverpool overturned a 3-0 halftime deficit in the UEFA Champions League final, winning on penalties against AC Milan in Istanbul. Manager Rafael Benítez, captain Steven Gerrard, and midfielder Vladimir Smicer each contributed, with the trio scoring three goals to force a 3-3 draw. Today’s Liverpool appeal over Ryan Gravenberch’s red card and LASK Champions League tie echo that 2005 resilience, confronting disciplinary scrutiny and European ambition. The 2005 triumph reminds clubs that overcoming setbacks can reshape seasons, prompting Liverpool to seek squad reinforcements and avoid repeat controversies.
