History

Historical Context

The April 15, 2015 blaze that gutted Paris’s Notre-Dame Cathedral sparked worldwide heritage-preservation efforts and prompted a €200 million restoration plan overseen by President François Hollande. Architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte coordinated reconstruction, employing 1,200 artisans and securing 30 % of funding from private donors. Similarly, on October 12, 2026, Mayor Ariel Weil reported the Marché des Enfants Rouges collapsed after a 3 a.m. fire, with Lieutenant Colonel Pierre de Bouvier confirming structural failure. The twin incidents underscore France’s urgent need to modernize fire-safety codes for historic sites, prompting legislative review by the Ministry of Culture.
