History

Historical Context

In 2019, New York City Council voted 44-1 to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day, reshaping the city’s commemorations. Mayor Bill de Blasio signed the ordinance, while the Italian American Labor Council warned the change would alienate 2 million Italian-American residents. Today, Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s refusal to attend the Columbus Day Parade echoes the 2019 shift, prompting the Columbus Heritage Coalition’s criticism. The clash signals escalating cultural battles in New York, likely prompting future city councils to legislate heritage events and alter parade sponsorships.
