History

Historical Context

In 1971, the U.S. Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling in New York Times Co. v. United States halted the Nixon administration’s attempt to block the Pentagon Papers. The Court highlighted the New York Times’ 7.5-million-copy circulation surge, emphasizing public demand for transparency amid the legal battle. Today, the 2026 federal judge’s temporary restraining order restoring CNN, MS NOW, and Politico access echoes the 1971 fight over press freedom and executive control. The precedent suggests that courts may continue to curb presidential attempts to limit media, shaping how Trump’s administration manages its press strategy.
