History

Historical Context

New York’s underground has long drawn attention, from a 1927 Pittsburgh sewer worker’s alligator encounter that sparked the city’s alligator myth, to the December 8 1995 Freddy’s Fashion Mart massacre that underscored security concerns in the city. Those precedents have heightened awareness of tunnel security, now evident as unauthorized incursions occur during the UN General Assembly.
