History

Historical Context

In 2007 a Siberian tiger escaped the San Francisco Zoo, killing three visitors and prompting a $2.5 million settlement and USDA-ordered barrier upgrades. A similar fatal breach occurred in October 2026 at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, triggering a health-and-safety investigation by South Yorkshire Police and Doncaster Council. These cases illustrate a growing pattern of enclosure failures that have spurred tighter licensing and international zoo-safety reforms.
