History

Historical Context

In 1972 President Richard Nixon named H.R. Haldeman chief of staff, concentrating power in a trusted insider. The same year the Watergate break-in on June 17 sparked a scandal that eventually forced Nixon’s resignation in 1974. President Donald Trump’s 2024 appointment of Natalie Harp as a senior aide echoes that tradition of personal patronage, reviving concerns about loyalty-driven governance.
