Event Restructuring and Scale
The 2026 Great American Beer Festival (GABF) was trimmed from three days to two and moved from the Colorado Convention Center to the outdoor Levitt Pavilion in Denver’s Ruby Hill neighborhood. Organizers cited declining attendance as the reason for the reduction. Despite the smaller footprint, the competition remained extensive, with 7,267 entries from 1,300 U.S. breweries and cider makers evaluated by 225 certified judges across more than 100 style categories.
Colorado Medalists
Colorado’s brewing community continued to dominate the state awards. Cannonball Creek Brewing of Golden captured three medals and repeated as brewery-of-the-year in its size class. Other repeat winners from the previous year included River North Brewery, Second Dawn, The Empourium, Glenwood Canyon Brewing, Avery Brewing, Verboten Brewing, Liquid Mechanics, Wild Blue Yonder, Holidaily, Snow Capped Cider, Prost Brewing, The Sandlot Brewery at Coors Field, New Belgium Brewing, and Haykin Family Cider. Gold-medal recipients ranged from Bent Barley Brewing’s Dry Irish Stout to Wild Blue Yonder’s Mexican-Style Pale Lager, while silver and bronze honors highlighted a broad mix of styles such as Belgian-Style Wit, American Pale Ale, and specialty ciders.
San Diego County Performance
Breweries from San Diego County earned a notable haul of 13 medals—seven gold, five silver, and one bronze—marking the highest gold-medal count for the region since 2021. Craft Coast Brewing of San Marcos was named Brewery of the Year for the 1,001-2,000-barrel production tier and secured two gold medals for its English-style Brown Ale and International Dark Lager. Stone Brewing added a gold and a silver in American Stout and Brown Ale categories, while The Lost Abbey took gold in the Other Strong Beer category. Additional accolades went to East Village Brewing, Ketch Brewing, and North Park Beer Co., among others.

Commentary on Trends
Industry observers note that the venue shift and shortened schedule reflect broader attendance challenges, yet the prestige of GABF medals remains a key driver for brewers nationwide. The continued success of repeat Colorado winners and the surge in San Diego County gold medals suggest that both established and emerging breweries are leveraging the competition’s visibility to reinforce brand reputation despite the festival’s scaled-back format.
