Giant Tiger Store on Pembina Highway Set to Close

By Drooid · · How we work

Store Closure Announcement

A Giant Tiger discount grocery on Winnipeg’s Pembina Highway will cease operations in February, according to a sign posted on the storefront. The closure leaves the city with one fewer low-price grocery option and adds to a wave of store shutdowns across Manitoba.

Recent Closure Trend

The Pembina location is at least the third Giant Tiger in the province slated to close this year, joining sites in downtown Winnipeg and The Pas. Two years earlier, the chain also shuttered stores on McPhillips and Main Street in Winnipeg. These successive closures have reduced the number of affordable-price grocery outlets available to local shoppers.

Shopper Reactions

Customers expressed concern that the loss of the store will strain household budgets. Rob Reimer, a nearby resident, questioned the timing, noting rising living costs and the removal of “cheaper options.” Jamol Wilson, who recently moved to Winnipeg from Toronto, warned that remaining retailers could raise prices, leaving shoppers with “nothing we can do.” Long-time patron Anna Kolodka recalled the store’s role in the community, citing its busy parking lot and the employment it provided to her children.

Official Response

CBC News contacted Giant Tiger for comment on the Pembina closure but had not received a response at the time of publication.

  • “All the other competition, they can jack prices up and there's nothing we can do about it at the end of the day, so it's all kind of boohoo.” — Anna Kolodka
