History

Historical Context

In 1998, the UK passed the Road Safety Act after a spike in deaths, especially the October 1997 A1 crash that killed a 19-year-old driver. The Department for Transport reported 5,500 road fatalities in 1997, a 12% rise from 1996, prompting parliamentary hearings and a call for stricter vehicle inspections. The A352 crash near Wareham, where an 18-year-old in a red Citroen C1 died, echoes the 1997 A1 incident’s young driver and missing dash-cam footage. Consequently, UK authorities have since mandated dash-cam usage for commercial fleets and intensified youth driver education, aiming to curb similar tragedies.
