History

Historical Context

After the NFL formed as the APFA in 1920 and merged with the rival AFL in 1970, the unified league created separate conferences and formalized special-teams roles, including a dedicated long snapper. The Miami Dolphins hired John Hock in 1971, setting a precedent for dedicated long-snappers. Jacksonville’s 2024 plan to add a full-time snapper echoes that early push for precision.
