History

Historical Context

Entering the 2009 BCS National Championship, the Texas Longhorns were 13-0, but Colt McCoy’s concussion forced true-freshman Garrett Gilbert in, and Alabama completed a 14-0 season to win 37-21. The loss echoed earlier title-game setbacks caused by quarterback injuries, such as Texas’s 2006 Rose Bowl win after Vince Young’s late heroics, underscoring how sudden QB losses can reshape championship outcomes.
