History

Historical Context

Berkeley’s 1992 city-council proclamation renamed Columbus Day as Indigenous Peoples’ Day, following a 1990 Quito conference that urged a quincentennial counter-celebration. South Dakota led the state-level shift in 1990, and the Biden administration issued the first presidential Indigenous Peoples’ Day proclamation in 2021. Today Montana and Ohio officially observe the holiday, reflecting a nationwide re-evaluation of the October observance.
