History

Historical Context

The Smiler collision on 2 June 2015 at Alton Towers injured 16 riders, caused two amputations and resulted in a £5 million Health and Safety Executive fine for Merlin Entertainments. That incident spurred stricter UK regulations on coaster braking and real-time inspections. Regulators now cite the same safety lapses after a stalled train on Six Flags Over Georgia’s Goliath coaster caused a rider to fall.
