History

Historical Context

In the 1994 midterm, Republicans captured a 54-seat House swing—the first majority since 1952—by rallying behind Newt Gingrich’s Contract with America and electing him Speaker. That “Republican Revolution” introduced combative, nationalized campaigning, a style echoed today as Donald Trump’s rallies invoke the same partisan fervor and polarization while alleging election theft.
