History

Historical Context

The Citizenship Amendment Act, passed on 12 December 2019, sparked nationwide protests that quickly reached Delhi. In December 2019 Delhi authorities invoked Section 144, shut mobile internet in parts of the city and closed 57 metro stations for two days, illustrating a pattern of using communication and transport bans to curb dissent. This precedent frames the later December 2020 four-day shutdown and the 2026 Jantar Mantar sit-in, raising ongoing civil-liberty concerns.
