Summary

Story summary

NASA's Perseverance rover broke the record for longest distance driven on another world.
It reached 28.10 miles (45.22 km) on Oct 11, 2026, surpassing Opportunity’s 28.06-mile record.
Perseverance achieved the mark in about five-and-a-half years, whereas Opportunity took nearly 15 years.
AutoNav guided over 90% of the drive, scanning 600,000 terrain points per pass.
NASA extended the mission to late 2028 to collect 29 samples, some 4-billion-year-old.

History

Historical Context

In 1976, NASA’s Viking 1 lander touched down on Mars, delivering the first high-resolution images and confirming the planet’s geology with its successful soft-landing. The Viking program, managed by JPL, transmitted 1,500 images and measured atmospheric pressure at 0.7 kPa and temperature near –45 °C, establishing a baseline for future rovers. Perseverance’s 28.10-mile trek in October 2026 eclipses Opportunity’s 28.06-mile record, echoing Viking’s pioneering spirit by extending Mars surface exploration with advanced scientific payloads. That continuity drives NASA to schedule Perseverance’s 2028 sample-return phase, promising insights into 4-billion-year-old rocks and future human missions while reinforcing planetary protection protocols.
