Summary

Perseverance Breaks Record

NASA's Perseverance rover broke the off-planet driving record, reaching 28.10 miles on Mars.
The record was logged on October 11, 2026, during the rover’s 2,006th Martian sol.
It surpassed Opportunity’s 28.06-mile record set from 2004-2018, achieved in nearly 15 years.
NASA approved an extension in October 2026, allowing the rover to explore the crater rim through 2028.

Summary

Perseverance Finds Biosignature

Perseverance discovered a potential biosignature in reddish rock at Cheyava Falls, suggesting ancient microbial activity.
The rover has secured 29 rock and regolith samples from the crater floor, delta fan, and rim.
Engineers are testing mobility hardware to reach 150–300 km range, far beyond the original 20 km design.
AutoNav now evaluates about 600,000 terrain points per observation, greatly improving hazard mapping.

History

Historical Context

NASA launched Viking 1 on 20 August 1975; after orbit insertion on 19 June 1976 it touched down in Chryse Planitia on 20 July 1976, becoming the first successful Mars lander and operating for 2,245 sols (about six years) at a cost of about $1 billion. Its legacy paved the way for Perseverance’s NASA 2021 mission and today’s human-exploration plans.
