History

Historical Context

The Smiler, a Gerstlauer coaster at Alton Towers that opened in 2013 with a world-record 14 inversions, collided with a stalled train on 2 June 2015, seriously injuring five riders. The HSE issued a prohibition notice, fined Merlin Entertainments £5 million and kept the ride closed until March 2016. That crash spurred tighter ride-maintenance rules and nationwide inspections across UK and US parks.
