History

Historical Context

Operation Cast Lead began on 27 December 2008 and ended 18 January 2009, killing roughly 1,300 Palestinians and destroying about 14,000 homes, according to the United Nations. The war cemented Israel’s control of Gaza’s airspace and borders, a restriction that persisted into 2026, where aid deliveries remain far below needed levels, deepening the reconstruction gap.
