Russia calls piracy
- The French navy boarded the oil tanker DF Peak about 450 nautical miles south of Réunion Island in the Indian Ocean on 12 October 2026.
- French officials said the boarding was to verify the vessel’s flag, ordered by the Réunion prefect and a public prosecutor, and legally authorized.
- The DF Peak, built in 2006, formerly served Sovcomflot and is Hong Kong-managed.
- Russia’s embassy called the seizure piracy and a blatant breach of international law, noting no notification.
