Newcastle-under-Lyme Opens Britain’s First “Social Supermarket”
By Drooid · · How we work
Launch of the Social Supermarket
Community Cupboard NUL CIC has opened the United Kingdom’s inaugural “social supermarket” in Newcastle-under-Lyme. The store is intended to assist residents who are coping with rising living costs by providing a dignified alternative to traditional food-bank distribution.
How the Store Operates
Customers become members by paying a £1 fee for a 12-month membership. Once registered, members purchase tokens that can be exchanged for groceries throughout the shop. Items are sold at cost price or below, giving shoppers the ability to select the products they need rather than receiving pre-packed parcels. The token system also allows the store to manage inventory and ensure that supplies are used efficiently.
Purpose and Expected Benefits
Founder Thomas Cliffe says the model aims to restore “freedom to shop with dignity,” contrasting it with the experience of receiving a bag of items from a food bank that may include unwanted goods. By letting shoppers choose their own provisions, the supermarket seeks to reduce waste and improve the sense of autonomy for people facing financial pressure.
Community Cupboard NUL CIC and Founder
Community Cupboard NUL CIC is a community-interest company that developed the concept and runs the supermarket. Thomas Cliffe, the organization’s founder, envisions the venture as a scalable solution that could be replicated in other areas of the country if it proves successful. The initiative reflects a broader effort by local charities to address the cost-of-living crisis through innovative, low-cost retail models.
