Poll Findings on Trump’s Financial Focus

An Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll of 2,140 U.S. adults conducted in late September found that a clear majority believe former President Donald Trump is using the office to advance his personal fortune. About six-in-ten respondents say he is either illegally profiting or acting unethically, while roughly one-in-ten think he is doing nothing wrong. More than half (56 %) say Trump has placed “a lot” of emphasis on his own businesses since returning to the White House, and a similar share (54 %) say the same about his family’s enterprises. In contrast, only about one-quarter say he has prioritized the country as a whole “a lot,” and roughly one-in-ten say he focuses “a lot” on ordinary Americans.

Public Opinion Breakdown

  • Legal vs. Ethical Concerns: 4 % of adults think Trump is doing something illegal; 2 % view his actions as unethical but not illegal. Democrats are far more likely to see illegal conduct, with eight-in-ten holding that view, while only about one-in-ten Republicans share it.
  • Partisan Differences: Roughly half of Republicans say Trump has emphasized the nation “a lot,” yet only a quarter of them believe he has prioritized personal business interests to the same degree. Independents fall between the two parties on both measures.

Official Statements & Responses

The White House has repeatedly dismissed the accusations, asserting that Trump has “zero conflicts” and acts solely in the nation’s interest. In a June financial-disclosure filing, Trump reported receiving more than $1 billion from new cryptocurrency ventures after loosening industry regulations.

Criticism & Opposition

Republican Audra Pelsue, 52, of Syracuse, New York, argued that critics are “too angry to see straight,” labeling dissent as “Trump derangement syndrome.” Democratic commentator Oscar Delgado, a former Trump voter from Michigan, said the president is “turning greedy” and not putting the country first.
