The Mallard Pointe Door-to-Door Prank

Around 11 p.m. on a Friday night, residents of the Mallard Pointe (also reported as Mallard Creek) neighborhood in New Castle County, Delaware, reported seeing two masked youths in tactical vests pounding on doors while carrying an object that resembled a rifle. Video captured by neighbors showed the individuals walking up to homes, shouting, and then fleeing after striking doors. Police later identified the weapon as a gel-bead (Orbeez) gun.

Police Response and Charges

New Castle County Police received the first call on Friday night and, after gathering tips, executed a search warrant at one suspect’s residence. Officers recovered the gel-bead gun, a tactical vest and a hockey-style mask. Investigators concluded the incidents were a prank and that no threats were made. Both a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old were arrested and charged with harassment, criminal mischief and criminal trespassing. An arraignment is pending.

Community Reaction

Neighbors described the episode as “awful” and expressed fear that the stunt could have resulted in a tragic outcome, especially in a neighborhood with children. One resident noted that the extreme nature of the prank could have led to someone being shot, while another emphasized that such behavior is “not funny” given the potential danger.

Upcoming Legal Process

The teenagers will appear before a court for arraignment, where the listed charges will be formally entered. If convicted, Delaware law prescribes penalties that may include fines, probation, community service, and possible incarceration, depending on the severity of each count. The case highlights concerns about youth-led pranks that mimic armed threats and the community impact of such actions.
